10 indie video games to look forward to in 2021

There are lots of weird and exciting indie games to look forward to in 2020, and I’m happy to report that there is much more to play in 2021.

Checking out this upcoming game is really exciting. There are so many interesting, strange and captivating games to look forward to in the new year. All of the games on this list are slated to come out in 2021, each one equally ambitious in achieving its goals. We’ve got some noir-style detective thrillers, a young teen anxiety, and some hand-drawn fun.

Of course, these aren’t all amazing indie games released in 2021 — too many to list.

From developer Rocket Adrift, Raptor Boyfriend: A High School Romance is about a shy and awkward teenager looking for love in the 1990s. This is a dating simulator and visual novel, in which the player — as the main character Stella — befriends a group of cryptid teenagers: a fairy, a talking velociraptor, and a bigfoot. It’s described as a 90s teen drama, and it looks like; he got everything from dramatic phone calls, make-out sessions, and tapes. The art style also looks amazing.

Raptor Boyfriend: A High School Romance will arrive in early 2021.

Saturnalia is a stylish survival horror game coming to the Epic Games Store in 2021. The game takes place in Sardinia, Italy in 1989, in an old village with creepy rituals — and people disappear every year. Most notable is the Saturnalia art style. I’ve never seen anything like this!

Saturnalia will be present at the Epic Games Store in 2021.

She Dreams Elsewhere, as you may have guessed, happened in a dream. Described as an adventure role-playing game, this indie game has a surreal setting — the perfect setting for a nightmare. The music composed by Mimi Page is impeccable.

She Dreams Elsewhere will arrive on Mac, Nintendo Switch, Windows PC, and Xbox consoles in 2021.

Canadian developer KO_OP is working on Goodbye Volcano High, a narrative game about a group of high school-aged dinosaurs as they’re figuring out life with graduation coming. It has been described as a cinematic play “about the end of an era, and the beginning of a love story.”

Goodbye Volcano High will arrive on Windows PC, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 in 2021.

Season, from developer Scavengers Studio, was recently announced during The Game Awards 2020, and it is one of the most prominent games of the event. The game seems like an extraordinary atmosphere, featuring a woman who collects memories of a beautiful and mysterious world.

Season is coming in 2021.

Nuts is a game about watching squirrels. It has a very different art style — looks amazing. In watching this squirrel, players will “uncover the secret that the curious creatures are hiding.” Personally, I am very excited.

Nuts will be out in 2021 on Windows PCs.

The name says it all — Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion. There are puzzles, harvests, battles, but most importantly, no taxes. “Teardown a corrupt vegetable government,” according to the Steam page. Who doesn’t agree with that?

Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion in 2021, on Nintendo Switch and Windows PC.

Sure, we’ve got a big cyberpunk video game at the end of 2020. But there’s a lot more to the genre, and you can see that on Chinatown Detective Agency. This is the year 2032 in stylish and futuristic Singapore. Made by Singapore-based developer General Interactive Co., it looks like an interesting future.

Like the others on this list, the game is coming in 2021.

From developer Visai Games, Venba has been described as a “narrative cooking game,” set in 1980s Canada. It centers on an Indian mother, with players tasked with cooking and remembering missing recipes. It’s a story about “family, love, loss, and more,” wrote the developer on Steam. This looks amazing.

This game will come out in November 2021.

Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 + 2 held me back for a while, but the skateboarding game I’m really looking forward to is SkateBird, from the developer Glass Bottom Games. Birds on skateboards!

You can make a wishlist for the game on Steam now, but the game will also be coming to the Nintendo Switch and other consoles.
