American Hacker Wipe North Korea Internet After US Inaction

A few weeks ago, North Korea seemed to have disappeared from the internet. Many think this is the work of other countries' governments. It turned out that there was only one person behind it all. Pseudonymous independent hacker using P4X handle.

As reported by Wired, anonymous hackers were responsible for a series of attacks that crippled North Korea's entire internet. He decided to take over the communist dictatorship after being targeted by some of the country's hackers earlier this year.

It appears he was the victim of a North Korean hacking campaign targeting security researchers. The attack targeted vulnerability research and development researchers to steal research and tools. After the attack, P4x was contacted by the FBI but was unable to receive the government's weak response.

North Korea’s internet blackout explained

Dissatisfied with the lack of a visible response from the US government, he decided to take matters into his own hands. He exploits vulnerabilities in authoritarian state systems to carry out his attacks.

He launched a "denial-of-service" attack on servers and routers that support North Korea's internet network. In just a few hours, he took down the entire nation's network. For context, North Korea only has a few dozen websites. Most of the citizens were not aware of the attack because they did not have access to the internet.

“I definitely wanted to affect the people as little as possible and the government as much as possible. I want them to understand that if you come at us, it means some of your infrastructure is going down for a while.”

P4x has also launched a website on the dark web called Project FUNK, or North Korea's FU project. He wants to recruit more fellow hacktivists to his cause, who have the skills and courage needed.
