Lara Croft fans will be in for a treat, as a recent remake of the missing Tomb Raider has been unearthed and fully playable. This game series has become a long-established franchise in the gaming world.

Today, Lara is sporting a more conservative and realistic look overall. When the Tomb Raider franchise rebooted in 2013, Lara was portrayed as a young and somewhat naive woman who had to face the moral consequences of her actions. This is something that is completely omitted from previous game offerings. Back in the early days of Lara’s conception, she can often be seen using her iconic twin pistol to remove any obstacle that stands in her way to reach her goal.

Tomb Raider: 10th Anniversary, a remake of the original Tomb Raider game for Sony’s PSP that was canceled in 2006, has recently re-emerged as a playable alpha, according to PC Gamer. The game was developed by Core Design before it was closed to support Tomb Raider: Anniversary and Tomb Raider: Legend across Crystal Dynamics, a re-concept of the original story of treasure hunter Lara Croft.

The playable alpha features the climbing, swimming, and common platforms of the original game without dialogue and enemies. It’s a neat throwback to the old style of Tomb Raider in contrast to the more cinematic and realistic approach the new game takes. The alpha includes levels set in Greece, Peru, and Croft Manor. You can see an example of the gameplay in the YouTube video below.

The journey that alpha files and assets take to get here is no easy feat. Core Design, creators of the original Tomb Raider, was eventually sold by its publisher Eidos to Rebellion after a canceled remake. The unfinished game was later revamped as a demo for the Indiana Jones game for LucasArts and as a National Treasure game. No pitch was finally picked up, and PSP gaming has faded into fan history and memory — until now.

To try this game yourself, you will need to download the file from the Internet Archive and follow the instructions on Tomb of Ash (a Tomb Raider fansite) so that the game is patched and playable. From there, you’re ready to sample the game’s unprecedented history.
