The Sony PS5 Teardown Shows There’s A Lot Of Fun

Microsoft’s Xbox Series X and Sony’s PlayStation 5 are ready to redefine console gaming on Nov 10, respectively. In the buildup to release, the two console giants have been aggressively flexing their product’s superior specs; Sony PS5 Teardown is the latest example.

Yesterday, PlayStation’s official YouTube channel posted a Sony PS5 Teardown video giving us a good look inside Sony’s high-end gaming machine. Yasuhiro Ootori, the VP of Hardware Design at Sony Interactive Entertainment, disassembled the console revealing some intriguing features and a powerful motherboard.

Before choosing the PS5, Ootori stated how the much-debated size of the console allowed it to maximize performance.

Highlights From The Sony PS5 Teardown

Plenty of I/O Options

As with any other device, it is convenient to have multiple connectivity options in a console. The I/O ports are beneficial when you want to play a media stored on your flash drive, copy your in-game screenshots to an external storage drive, or charge your DualSense controller. The next-gen PlayStation takes care of your connectivity needs by offering a variety of ports.

On the front, the PS5 features a USB Type-C port, a USB Type-A port, and an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive. The Type-C port is a SuperSpeed USB outlet with a maximum speed of 10Gbps, whereas the Type-A comes with Hi-Speed USB support. On the other hand, the optical disc drive supports 4K Blu-ray media and enables you to play your physical PS5 titles.

When it comes to I/O options at the back, PS5 sports 2 USB Type-A slots with SuperSpeed support, a LAN port, an HDMI OUT port, and, obviously, an AC power port.

Big Rear-side Vent For Maximum Airflow

If you’ve ever noticed how your console runs a lot cooler when on a desk instead of inside a cabinet, then you know the importance of unobstructed airflow. A good airflow means your hardware won’t suffer from high temperatures, which extends its longevity.

To make sure the PS5 stays cool even during a long gaming session, Sony has converted almost all of the rear-side into a vent. Also, the ridges under the white panels are strategically designed to allow maximum air passage.

An Ingenious But Awkward Vertical Base

The PS5 comes bundled with a vertical stand or base that you’d have to use if you want to place the console vertically.

The base is easily removable and has a rotatable compartment to store the screw which holds it into place. When not using it, you can unscrew the base and tuck it on the panel side marked with the iconic PS button symbols.

The ingenious approach used for the base makes it feel less like an accessory and more like a part of the console, even when it isn’t being used.

While some people appreciate the base’s smart design, others see it as an extra effort that could have been avoided. Xbox expressed which side they are on by taking a jibe at PS5’s vertical base on Twitter. Unlike its rival, Xbox Series X allows users to seamlessly change the console’s orientation from vertical to horizontal or vice-versa.

Dust Accumulation Remedy

To make the console’s cleaning user-friendly, Sony designed an easily detachable outermost panel. You have to slide the cover off to unveil the underside.

The layer under the top panel includes specially designed pockets for trapping dust particles. This minimizes the risk of dust clogging in the internal compartment of the console.

Easily-accessible Storage Expansion Slot

The PS5 comes with a gigantic 825GB NVMe SSD, but that might not be enough for users who play several games. Keeping this in mind, Sony has included an expandable storage compartment right under the top panel.

Storage-heavy users can use this SSD slot to get more space for their games and other content. Apart from SSD, USD HDDs are also compatible with PS5.

As per PS5’s Lead System Architect Mark Cerny, the company will also release a list of recommended SSDs for the console in the future.

Liquid Metal Cooling

With great power, comes great heating issues, which Gamers of all platforms can confirm.

PS5’s high-end specs such as a custom 8-core AMD Zen 2 CPU, a custom AMD RDNA 2 GPU, and 16GB GDDR6 RAM enable hardware-intensive games to run and look their best as well. However, running raytracing-enabled games on 4K also produces a fair amount of heat inside the console.

When the temperature exceeds a certain mark, you may experience in-game lag and may even risk overheating the system. To prevent this, an optimal cooling solution was required.

That’s why, in addition to the rear vent and the massive fan inside, Sony has opted for a liquid metal thermal interface to keep the temperature in check. The console also has a big heatsink that looks similar to PS4’s but is more effective overall.

Farewell, Drive Noise

Those PS users who mainly buy physical games or use the disc drive often to play Blu-ray media are in for a treat. Gone are the days of the irritating sound of the disc spinning inside the console’s optical drive.

Most of the time, the noise is mild enough and ignorable. But, sometimes, when your game requires constant reading from the disc, it could get so noisy that you’d feel you’re inside the disc drive itself.

Well, the 5th-gen PlayStation comes with an insulated disc drive, which significantly muffles this noise, helping you focus on the game better. Finally, this is a level of immersion you’d be happy to let go.
