How to remove effects in Minecraft with console commands

Minecraft has more than fair status effects, some from potions, some activated from enchantments, and others caused by hostile mobs. However, sometimes players have to get rid of them and return to their basic state.

Effects can be removed in several ways, depending on whether the player wants to use console commands or not. In traditional Survival Mode, all players have to get rid of the status effect in a good step.

Drinking milk will negate the status effect and return the player to a normal state. In addition, being saved from death by the Totem of Undying or exiting The End via the return portal will also remove the status effect from the player character.

There are several other ways to remove status effects for solo Minecraft players with cheats enabled and server admins or console command-enabled members. One way is to type commands into the game chat.

These commands differ slightly depending on the version of Minecraft you're playing, but they perform the same basic functions.

For Minecraft: Java Edition players on versions 1.13 and above, entering the following commands in the chat can remove status effects:

  • "/effect clear <PlayerName>" will remove all status effects on the target player.
  • "/effect clear @a" will remove status from all players in the current Minecraft world.

For Minecraft: Bedrock Edition players, the following syntax is needed to activate the same effect:

  • "/effect <PlayerName> clear" removes status effects on the target player. If left blank, the player that executed the command will remove their effects.
  • "/effect @a clear" will remove effects from all players currently connected to the Minecraft world, alive or not.

Given that these commands work in the chat console, they can also be executed via the Command Block. This gives players the ability to turn Command Blocks into a sort of "cleanser" by programming the above console commands into blocks.

Thus, the player's status effect will be effectively removed by interacting with the block. Since Command Blocks also respond to Redstone mechanics, there might even be a way to remove player status effects automatically using the Redstone engine.

Many of the status effects in Minecraft are helpful, but suffering Wither or Poison is another story. Be sure to save a bucket of milk when facing an opponent who can cause this effect.

If all else fails, a quick typing of a console command can do the job too. It all depends on how a player wants to enjoy their experience.
