Minecraft Skyblock: How to get cocoa beans

Minecraft's popularized Skyblock survival map is as intense as it is addictive. They place players on islands suspended in the sky with few resources to work with.

Growing any form of the plant is difficult, especially for those from other biomes. For example, cocoa beans are hard to find, because the forest biome is not immediately available.

Depending on the Skyblock map, some rare acorns may be provided in a single chest when the game starts, but this is not the case for many other iterations of Skyblock.

The version of Minecraft played also affects the cocoa bean acquisition process in the standard Skyblock. While some Skyblock multiplayer servers like Hypixel have overcome the shortage of certain rare resources, single-player Skyblock could be a different story.

Getting cocoa beans in Minecraft Skyblock

Unfortunately for Minecraft: Java Edition players, the easiest form of getting cocoa beans on Skyblock has been patched in the game's 1.6 updates. Before the update, players could trade with villagers for cocoa beans. However, this is no longer the case. Fortunately, there is still hope for Minecraft's Bedrock Edition players.

In Bedrock Edition, players without access to the forest biome can get some cocoa beans if they are lucky. While cacao beans tend to grow on naturally growing Minecraft forest trees (those planted won't produce cacao pods naturally), Bedrock players can get them from the Wandering Merchant. In addition, when fishing in the forest biome, it is unlikely that players will catch cocoa beans as "junk" items. For players just starting on their Skyblock adventures, the Wandering Merchant is probably the best choice.

Many Skyblock maps have explained the lack of cocoa gain in Java Edition, so map choice is important. Certain maps may not give Java players access to cocoa or forest biomes, leaving essentially no choice.

For Bedrock players hoping to trade with Wandering Merchants, that would be a bit of luck. These special mobs appear randomly, and their inventory doesn't stay static.

There is no surefire way to spawn a Wandering Merchant in vanilla Minecraft Survival Mode. However, the game code tries to spawn one periodically during gameplay.

If the Wandering Merchant is not on the game map, the game will attempt to spawn one every 20 minutes in the real world (a standard day in Minecraft) until it succeeds. Having a village bell is a plus, as merchants can spawn near them. However, this tends not to be true for most Skyblock maps.

The good news for Minecraft players is that once the Wandering Merchant appears, it will be within 48 blocks of the player's vicinity. Once he shows up in earnest, it just means trading with him every time he appears and hoping that his random trading inventory will have cocoa beans. For the price of one Emerald, the Wandering Merchant will part with his three cocoa beans.

To avoid dependence on Wandering Merchants, players who have obtained some cocoa beans must create fields for them. This will avoid supply shortages and headaches in the future.
